Warning: Discussions of drug addiction/drug dealing
When I first watched this short, it wasn’t my favorite. However, rewatching I realize that we were getting a deeper insight into Blitzo’s sister, Barbie. This was, for me a great short on how to give a deeper perspective on a character we rarely see/talk about in the Helluva Boss series.
One scene that I love is when Barbie is walking through an alley in Pride City and comes across a drug deal happening. At first, we see her eyes wide, temptation hitting her in wanting to participate. However, her eyes fall back, reflecting on the past and the reasons why she became sober and stay away from the business. Honestly, this section shows a lot of layers in her reaction than what she says. There’s so much we can take away from her desperately trying to stay away but temptation is always around the corner which is unfortunate. Medrano was able to capture this in Barbie perfectly and hope we see more of those quiet, vulnerable moments in these characters down the road.
I also love her girlfriend Kendra. She was able to support her while also having her limits and confront her on the drugs she found in the bathroom. I do wish we got to see more of an explanation of why she had the drugs. Because based on the section of her turning away of dealing drugs/having that addiction, I think there was more to the story and I think there could’ve been more dialogue regarding the drugs being found. However, to some degree I understand why she said what she said because based on there relationship, they were constantly sticking there neck out for someone who repeatedly kept letting them down and they can only do so much before Barbie realizes what she is doing isn’t working and decides to save herself. At the same time, though, I do genuinely believe that Barbie is attempting to change for the better.
I do hope we get to see more Barbie and Blitzo interactions down the road and see there relationship mend. It might not be the same, but there could be an opportunity to further develop Barbie and the reasons she started getting into drugs/selling drugs in the first place.
Great insight on a new character and can’t wait to see more of Helluva Boss this fall!
